About Our Namesake: Chief Truckee The town of Truckee, California takes its name from a Northern Paiute leader who lived through one of the most turbulent eras in the region's history. In 1844 he guided an emigrant party from the Humboldt River to California by way of the Truckee River, Donner Lake, and Donner Pass — and over the following years he assisted thousands of westward travelers crossing the Sierra Nevada. Grateful pioneers named the river, and later the town, in his honor. The origin of the name itself is debated. His own name may have been "Tru-ki-zo," which could have become distorted into "Truckee." A popular account holds that he greeted newcomers with the Paiute word for "all right," which sounded like "tro-kay," and they mistook it for his name. Both stories are still told today. WikipediaSierraSun Known later in life as Captain Truckee, he was the father of Chief Winnemucca and grandfather of Sarah Winnemucca, the noted Paiute author and activist. We're proud to operate in a place that carries his name and remembers his history. Trokay Handyman operates throughout Greater Nevada County and surrounding areas, handling everything from deck repairs and bathroom remodels to snow removal and emergency plumbing fixes. DJ Miller started the business after years working in the trades, and he still runs jobs and answers calls himself. When you call, you're talking to the person who'll be at your property, not a dispatcher reading a script. The work covers the full range of what mountain properties need—freeze-thaw damage on decks, ice dam removal after heavy snow, defensible space clearing for wildfire compliance, bathroom and kitchen remodels, plumbing and electrical repairs that require permits and inspections. We're fully bonded and insured in California, insured, and familiar with the permitting processes in Nevada County and surrounding jurisdictions. Most of the work happens at elevation where conditions are harder on structures—UV exposure strips deck finishes faster, snow load stresses railings and roofs, freeze-thaw cycles crack boards and lift fasteners. We account for those variables in how we build and repair, not just in what we charge. A deck stain system that works at lower elevation fails here within a year. Plumbing that isn't insulated properly freezes. We've seen the failures and we build to avoid them. The business operates year-round. Winter means snow removal, frozen pipe repairs, and ice dam clearing. Spring and summer are remodel season—bathrooms, kitchens, flooring, painting. Fall is defensible space clearing and preparing properties for snow. We schedule larger projects in advance and respond to emergencies—burst pipes, roof leaks, storm damage—within 24 hours in most cases.
